Default Sportage Difficult To Start

Hello All.

I have a quick question. I do not yet own a Sportage but am looking at one. The wife has been after me to get her a small utility vehicle and she really likes the Sportage.

We found one nearby from a private seller, its a 1998 4X4 with 82k miles on it. Its in great shape, clean but the seller did state there was one issue with it. After driving a while it becomes very difficult to start. When its cold as I understand it, it starts right up.

According to the owner, the exhaust has been replaced, new alternator, new battery and they stated the heads had been overhauled. They are giving up on it and just want to get rid of it.

Im very accustomed to turning wrenches and so not afraid to work on a vehicle (Rebuilding a Grand Prix engine and transmission right now in fact) but Im kind of at a loss as to what would cause such an issue. I personally would not have started with the exhaust, heads, etc., I would have looked for something electronic, a crank sensor or something with the ignition coils or control module (assuming it has distributorless ignition).

They are wanting to part with it at a very good price but before I committed to buying it I first wanted to get some input on what the possible issue is to determine if its something that wouldnt cost a lot to fix or if it was something I should just pass on.

At any rate, I would greatly appreciate any input. Im going to continue looking around and see if I can find anything in the forums here.

I had a air temp sensor cause a hard start when the engine was warm so you may want to check anything to do with temp sensor air and water maybe even o2. Just an idea. Coils can get weak when engine is hot as well.

Dunno if this helps - from manual.

Hard to start (cold engine).

ldle air control valve not working.
Defective throttle position sensor.
Fuel pressure too low.
Coolant temp sensor open circuit or out of range.

If its hard to start up when the engine is warmed up, it could be the ground to the starter.
