New to the forum/air bag light on

Howdy all. I just picked up a 2001 Sportage for my 19 yo daughter. The air bag light is flashing, and also the center of the steering wheel feels real spongy when you press on it. Almost like there's no bag in there. The lady I bought it from said one day the light started blinking. Could it be that the bag is at fault? Shouldn't the steering wheel cover be firm? You can take your finger and push in the center and it easliy goes in an inch. I hate taking my vehicles to the dealer for something that I can do. Any help? Thanks in advance.

Don't know if OBD II code readers will pickup airbag codes. You can try, but if not, you will have to have dealer read codes.
