Default 2001 sportage screaming

2001 sportage won't get above 2500 rpms. When i step on it, the engine screams and sounds like a tortured bird. Won't get above 2500 rpm's. Replaced fuel pump - no improvement.

Where exactly is the source of the screaming under the hood? Before replacing any more parts, I would locate the noise first. It very well may be the source of the problem.

The screaming seems to come from the middle towards the firewall

I will add that the engine starts and idles well - it's when I step on it that it screams. It sounds like a loose belt, but it isn't, and of course that wouldn't keep the engine from speeding up, anyway.

Is there a whooshing sound underneath? Have to roll down the window and listen. If so it could be that the front cat converter has broken apart and is stopping up the 2nd converter.

So, does it happen when idling or when driving?
What do you mean will not go over 2500 - under what circumstances? Does it reach this point easy? Did you try to downshift (kick)? Can you downshift manually?

What exactly the scream is? Is it screaming "let me go"?
Record it and post the sound, maybe it will help.

It happens whether idling or driving - the car will barely climb a hill because as I step on the gas, the screaming starts. Think: tortured seagull. I had the two cat converters replaced recently - within about 5000 miles. Could they be acting up already?

Oh, and I add that the engine seems pretty normal running up to 2500 rpms or so. Then, if I ask for more, the screaming starts and it just won't speed up.

I would exclude torque then. It has nothing to do with RPM at this point. If it does not rev at all I would look problems with fuel pressure - obstructed lines, dirty filters. Also, there are some sensors (I do not remember what exactly) but someone had similar problem here.
Timing/ignition is right?

I don't know if timing and ignition are alright. I've had recurring engine problems and I know that that stuff was gone through not long ago. I just tried driving the car again. Now I would say the sound is a twitter that gets louder as gas is increased. The sound starts around 1200 rpms. As I mentioned, I replaced the fuel pump and had no improvement. There was no water or other foreign matter on the intake screen of the pump. I'm thinking about unbolting the converters and seeing if that helps (not to leave them off, but to see if they are causing the symptoms).
