Thumbs down will not start

I have a 99 sportage. as I was driving the engine died and it will not start. Replaced coil packs, spark plugs and wires. Replaced fuel filter and before attaching fuel line had someone try and start, fuel flowed. Engine light is on. What else can I check without going to mechanic shop and read with OBD II? Engine does turn over.

Welcome to the forum.

Most likely the timing belt gone.
Try using a flash light and view the camshaft through the oil filler hole while someone cranks the engine - if the camshaft does not rotate then of course it's the timing belt that's gone.

Thank you ron1004!! I just checked it as you said and the camshaft is not turning. So my next question...Great to finally know what's wrong...any illustrations and guidelines for changing the timing belt?

You're welcome.

You should find a few good posts on the forum and the KiaTech's web site has this info in the "Shop" section (see my sig for the link).

Consider using the timing belt kit which includes the idler and tensioner rollers, and the water pump.
The rollers and water pump are reasonably cheap.
