Default Gas smell and 'burping'

Hello everyone,

I have a 2001 Sportage with 99,000 miles. When it gets really cold here, below 10 degrees, it smells like gas really bad inside and outside the vehicle. Also I cannot fill it with gas without gas coming back out of the fill neck. I'm thinking these two problems are related......any ideas?

I saw another post that said the fuel smell was due to a evap canister being clogged.....and some other post that said the 'burping' problem was a clogged vent line..........does that evap canister have anything to do with the venting?

Also does anyone know anything about this filter in the gas tank?

Thanks

Tripp

Likely the charcoal canister.

Its location is by the filler pipe not in the tank & has been mentioned several times. It's location and how to, which is simple is also is in our online manual.

Do you suppose its the cause of BOTH problems, as well as CEL?

Thanks

Hello,
Me again. I can't seem to find the info regarding CHARCOAL CANISTER when I search the DO IT YOURSELF forum....am I missing something?

OK. I assume you are referring to the 'sperarator' that supposed to run parallel to the filler pipe, right? Well here's where it gets weird.......i looked under my sporty and viola, THERE IS NO SEPARATOR as shown on the kia tech info site!

Also the Kia site talks about replacing a canister under the hood on the passenger side, a square deal called Evaporative Emissions Canister...........and you guessed it, its not there either......

Is it possible that KIA modified these vehicles for different countries or mid way through production due to know problems?

Thanks

Tripp

the charcoal canister will cause the tank to improperly vent. the way it works is the canister close valve will stay open and allow the vapors in the tank to vent through the canister. the active charcoal in the canister will catch the vapors while the tank is venting and store them until the conditions are right while the engine is running to vent them through the evap lines and into the intake manifold to be burned in the engine.

either the canister is saturated with gas because you've topped off the tank and some spilled into the canister or the charcoal has simply broken up in the canister and it has clogged itself up. the canister can be one of 2 places on the sportage. the 4 wheel drive models had it under the hood on the passenger side of the engine bay and the 2 wheel drive models have it under the rear of the vehicle between the rear axle and the rear bumper. it's covered by a plastic cover.

Default Additional information

Hello

I have a 4x4 and could not find the canister in the rear of the vehicle. I've went to kiatechinfo.com and it shows a square canister....................my sporty has a cylindrical canister in its spot. Is this the problem? Do I need to replace this item to solve my problem?
If so how do I find this part? The sites for kia parts show the square canister.....

if it's not under the hood, it's under the rear of the vehicle. it should be between the rear axle and the rear bumper. i have one on the lift at work right now but i won't be able to get a picture until tomorrow. it's covered by a black cover that is bolted onto the bottom of the vehicle.

you're looking for a rectangular canister. the round one under the hood is not a charcoal canister. it's made to catch moisture and only let vapors through.
