Question 4x4 problems

I own a 2001 Kia Sportage EX 4X4 5 speed. I have been using the 4x4 no problem through winter. However, recently there seems to be a problem with the 4 wheel drive. When driving in 2 wheel drive, the vehicle shifts and runs perfectly. But when I engage 4x4 high, a really loud hummming noise follows. It will still drive in 4x4 high but that unnatural loud noise is unbearable. When I shift the 4 wheel drive knob back to 2 wheel drive, it does not disengage immediately like it did before. What's going on here? Please advise me on the cheapest solution with this problem, if there is one.

Heeelp!!

First thing I would do is check the oil in the transfer case to make sure it hasn't leaked out. Did you recently change tires and maybe have two different size or type tires on it? Check the CV joints to make sure the boots arent ripped up. Thats all I have.

x2 on the transfer case fluid check. Especially if you were using 4WD all winter. Also check the gear oil in the front differential.

Default 4x4 problems

I haven't changed tires and the cv boots seem fine. I will check the fluids this week-end. The sound seems to be coming from the front.(driver's side I think) Also when I am making a turn in 4x4 high or accelerating slowly I hear a repeated clicking sound.(like metal to metal), but it does go away once I speed up.

It sounds to me like the CV joint may be bad now that you are saying you hear he noise while turning and under acceleration. The joint can go bad even though the boot looks ok. Still make sure to check the fluids.
