Default Coolant Sensor

Does the 02 Sportage use 2 seperate coolant senors? 1 had a single male end on it and the other has a connector with I think about 3 wires. They both look like the screw into the water neck so it this right?

Yes, the single prong one is for the temp gauge on the dashboard, and the other supplies coolant temp info to the ECM.

What is the Temp at which the thermostat opens? and what kind of info the other sensor sends to the ECU?

Dealership would have one but I'm sure they would overcharge you for it. Try rockauto.com

The coolant temp sensor sends engine temp info to the ECM to help determine the Air/Fuel ratio. Like when you first start your car the engine is cold so the ECM sends more fuel into the engine to help warm it up. So when the sensor goes bad, Either it starts fine and runs like crap later because it's flooding the engine because it keeps thinking the engine is cold, or it's hard to start but once it's running it's fine.
