Default Anti theft device '97

Hi folks,
I just picked up a 97 sportage 4x4. So far, so good except for one thing. The antitheft device is on my last nerve. If you don't open the central locking system with the key ring button, you don't drive. This is a German spec vehicle (I'm in Germany). Does the American models have this? If so, is there a way of disabling it without a butcher knife and will not ruin anything else?

Thanks, Dave

Hello Dave,
Yes the US version is just as annoying and idiotic. I don't know how many knots i have gotten on the back of my head from having it set automaticly in my ear while under the hood.
i spent a lot of money buying the "Factory" Shop manuals and one of the very big things missing in them is a decent testing procedure on the alarm (or any electrical system for that matter) that would point to a good by-pass, and lacking good wiring diagrams.
Once i get mine running right and do some up-grades to the electrical i will take some time and try to find a good solution. I want to make the alarm owner controled as to when it sets and still maintain it's other functions. I will post what i come up with but it might be around the end of November before i find the time.

Thanks. I don't have the alarm, just the no start thing. I just read on a forum here that it is on the same fuse as the dome light. I'll check that tomorrow. If so, at least I'll know how to disable it. I got off night shift this morning and took me forever to get it started. We'll see.

Thanks again,

Dave
