So it's dhs car I'm talking about. He went to the bank on Friday, was pulling out of the parking lot, and *poof* car died. Had it towed back home. Took a look at it yesterday, and I replaced the broken belt. It was the one that runs to the ac. So anyway, go to start the car, and nothing happens. I mean literally, nothing. The stupid tow truck man. I told him to lock the key in the car, since I wasn't following the car back home. Well, he did exactly that, locked it in, with the key in the ignition, turned ON. So it sat for 2 days and killed the battery. Brought my car around to jump it, but still, nothing happens. Now it makes noise, if I try to jump it, there's a click, and the engire makes a whirring noise, and the fan starts spinning. Nothing else, it doesn't sound like the engine is trying to turn at all, except for the funky whirring noise. I took a look inside the oil cap, and the cam is spinning.
So, does anyone have a clue what might have happened, or what the whirring noise might indicate?
I'd recommend that you take the timing belt covers off and confirm that the belt is good and the valve timing is 100% - also check for spark and signs of fuel getting through to the cylinders i.e. fuel wet plugs.
When you attempt to start it does the starter engage and the crankshaft turn ?

I don't know much about kia engines, I only do VWs personally, but I'm hoping that a kia engine isn't too different from others.
With the car attached to jumper cables to my ford, it does appear that the crank is turning. I'm certain the cam is turning, and I'm hoping the crank is behind the pulley in the center? If so, then yes, it's turning as well. But, there's none of the starting noise that you would think comes from a car with good compression. Truly, it sounds like there's no compression to get everything moving. I haven't done a compression test, mainly because I don't have a tester, and it's a PIA to get to the spark plugs.

It sounds like you confirm the crank is rotating, so in that case I'd say the timing belt is gone.

if the cams are spinning then the timing belt can't be broke. an engine with no compression could make a whirling noise but without actually hearing the noise it's hard to tell. i would try a compression test and see what it says.
