Hello everyone, can someone please help me? I have a 2000 Kia Sportage 2wd Automatic 4 dr, the noise I am getting is more of a "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" noise as the truck starts to roll above 10mph or so. I've raised the rear-end and placed it on jacks, I then put it into drive and had the rear wheels roll. The noise was there but I couldn't pin point where the noise was coming from.... Can anyone point me in the right direction? almek99 is a very big help, he gave me an idea one time but I've misplaced his email. Alan, if your there please help me out once again... Thank you all who are reading this post....
Sounds like something's rubbing. On moving parts, that's bad. Place your hand on different parts (nonmoving) of the axle housing and feel for a vibration. Or get a mechanic's stethoscope and use that.

Hi. I don't have a Sportage but I have a Sorento. Have you tried raising the veh up( on stands please) and with the engine off rotate the wheels. you might hear the noise better with the engine off. Could be a driveshaft noise. (U-joints or spline going to the tranny)
Side question. Do they have a 2 piece driveshaft? If yes you might check the center bearing. It could be getting ready to give up the game. If you are real adventurous drop the driveshaft and spin only the differential assembly.
These are just suggestions I would do. I don't know your mechanical ability but you do. Good luck. Noises can be a pain.

My 00 Sportage doesn't have a two piece D shaft and that's a 4 door 4wd. Even money says his doesn't either, so that eliminates that possibility. Dropping the D shaft does have it's attractions, though; You can isolate the pinion and check the trans output.
In any case, if you have little or no wrench time, this is the perfect opportunity to gain some.

Could it be the center support bearing assembly? I have THAT problem.
Hey everyone, Thank you for your input....I like the idea with the engine off, I didn't try that.. I will for sure.... As for the Driveshaft, Yes it is a 2 piece. I've noticed that the driveshaft comes from the tranny to the center of the car then another shaft is connected from the center to the rear diff.... I've worked on other cars and have never seen this set up before.. Mine is a 4door but it is only 2wd, so maybe that's the reason... I will look that asap and will let you all know how it goes... Let me tell you HOW ANNOYING THIS NOISE IS!!!! It becomes annoyingly loud and all eyes turn to you when you drive along side others....Thank you all once again....
First time the center support bearing on my Sorento went, it froze in the rubber support and spun inside. It made some weird noises. The second time I caught it before it completely destroyed the rubber mount. I don't know about the Sportage but the U-joints on the 2WD Sorento are not servicable. If they are and the vehicle has a few miles on it I would suggest replacing the u-joints. The u-joint has to come apart on the center one might as well replace it.
