Default Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Has anybody replaced their oxygen with a universal 4 wire sensor? I bought one for the Sportage and don't know which way to wire it. The factory plug has a gray, black, and 2 white wires. The new plug I bought has a gray, black, white, and purple. I connected black to black, gray to gray, white to white, and purple to white. The check engine light came back on in about 5 minutes. Assuming the black and gray wires were correct to swaped the whites and purple and light still came on. Help please!!!!!!

Sorry. I usually replace equipment with heavier duty or OE, never universal.
