Unhappy 2000 Sportage no start

Hello:

I have a 2000 2.0 Sportage it blew a head gasket, when I took the head off it looks like this is not the first time the engine had been apart. I sent the head to a machine shop and reassembled the engine the timing had been checked several times. The fuel pump only pumps fuel when cranking is this normal? I am used to a electric pump running all of the time, anyway this engine will not start. I suspect the check engine light bulb has been removed I bought this Kia for my daughter we live on a farm and have to have 4X4 in the winter to get in and out. The head gasket blew and coolant ran down the rear of the engine did this ruin the crank position sensor?

Please Help

Steve

Welcome to the forum.

The fuel pump only runs for a short time when the ignition is turned on and if no ignition pulse is seen then it will stop - if ignition pulses are present it runs continuously.

The coolant alone should not damage the crank position sensor.

Check that the valve timing is 100% and that you have spark on the plugs and if that's in order, you might want to try what some others have done and that is crank it with the injectors removed and plugged into the fuel rail - take note of the fire risk with this.
