Question 2000 Sportage died at traffic light

My teenage daughters 00 Kia Sportage died while sitting at a traffic light and never started again. She said it ran a little rough before this happened. We checked the timing belt and it's not broken but seems a little loose. We can't find a manual and she's driving us nuts to fix it. Can someone give us guidance on where to start?

Thanks,
Donna

Default well

Try to provide us with more information but ill try to help anyway. If the vehicle is turning over but not starting up, id first check the fuel pump. Have someone turn the key on (without cranking the car) and listen to the fuel pump which is behind the back seat on the passenger side under the carpet. Listen to hear a humming sound coming from this area.

Look at the ignition, if the coils go bad then this will cause this.. Because it was running rough and then it died makes me think its ignition, but theirs other possibilities. Also, was their any check engine lights? If so, try to get them scanned.

Check out the battery cables, that can cause a selection of issues.

Try to give a little bit more details and check over those few things. Find out if its either A, getting fuel or not, or B, if its getting proper ignition and that will narrow it down.

Hi did the engine overheat at all before it died?
We have had major problems with our car since it started overheating, and then did what you describe, it eventually would start each time but the problem escalated when the mechanics couldn't find anything wrong with it.
It doesn't help that we live in Bulgaria and no-one here know about Kia's!

I hope you find out the problem

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect the timing belt has jumped a few teeth.

Take a look at the KiaTech web site for dteail on how to check and replace the belt.

Thats the thing, when a car overheats its affecting everything. My 94 grand am overheated and one of the plug caps cracked causing it to run horrible, I bought a 94 camry because it was overheating and stopped running. From running hot it turned the plug wires into crispy lil french fries Replaced the wires and boom. Same concept, my girfriends sportage overheated twice and shortly after that it broke down completly for two months until we started dating and i replaced the coils, wires, and plugs, and boom.

Something to think of.
