Default 2000 Sportage died while driving

My 2000 Sportage (106,000 miles) died today as I slowed for a traffic light. It would turn over and kind of shutter when I tried to restart, but it wouldn't start. It has had a check engine light on (indicating fuel tank pressure sensor) for some time but it had been running fine. Any ideas?...timing belt vs. fuel delivery problem?

Likely fuel related -- really need to know the specific code/s -- meanwhile you could try just removing and replacing the fuel tank filler cap and see if it will start.

Get someone to crank it while you look into the oil filler cap to see if the camshaft is rotating as you crank just to get an idea if the timing belt is still OK.

You mention that the fuel tank pressure codes been up a while, so it would be best to check what codes are up now.

Sometimes the camshaft cover gaskets leak oil into the spark plug cavities causing misfires and possible no ignition spark on the plugs - I'd check this and confirm that the plugs are OK.

Then it could also be fuel problem as Harry mentions.

I have had the exact same problem with my 2000 Sportage. After several attempts to find the problem as well as several hundred dolllars it all came down to the main engine relay. Replacing this is only a $20.00 or so item and should correct your problem.

This is certainly a possible cause in this case too, and to confirm it would be best to check the fuel rail pressure, which would identify a problem with the fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel pump relay.
If there's no fuel pressure nor spark, then I'd suspect the main relay.

I'll second that on the main relay. It would be $20 well spent. If it doesn't fix it, keep it for a spare. Chances are you will need it someday.

I would rather not just spend money on any part without a proper diagnosis, and in the case of the main relay and the fuel pump relay, I would swap them around with other's in the fuse/relay box, such as the lights relay if you'd like to do a process elimination.

I will agree on diagnosing the problem, but I checked mine every way I knew, it checked good each time, and the vehicle would only occasionally start. Mine only has the main and fuel pump relays, so nothing I could swap it with. I now know that these are prone to fail, so I'm keeping a new one in the glove box. 20 bucks is not much to insure this doesn't leave me stranded.
