Default Difficult 2 start, when it does, it high idles

My 96 sporty ran great this AM, this afternoon I jumped out the coolant temp sensor to test my theory of trannys hard shift when cold.

I started the engine only to find that it took 15-20 revolutions for the motor to start with a strong gas smell as if flooded, then jumping to a 1200-1500 RPM idle.

No fuses/relays are blown anywhere and I suspect the IAC value (Idle Air Control Value) is DOA. I had cleaned it a month ago due to irractic idle.

Would this be a fair guess as to the IAC value dying?????

Not 100% sure but I thought I'd read somewhere that the IAC sensor/module can't be replaced/cleaned.

If the car was running okay before you removed the coolant sensor would it suggest that somethings gone wrong there? Maybe the coolant sensor is asking the ECU to run the engine at a higher rate of revs in order to bring it upto operating temperature quickly?
