98 idles rough, wont rev of 3500, shaking and dieing
Hi, my 98 sportage is having problems. Its idling rough, shaking the car, missing out, cutting out, not revving past 3500rpm, and it was dieing. I changed the coils, coil wire harness, plug wires, and spark plugs and still the same problem. I took it to a shop and they changed the things again and it still does the same thing, they was not sure what else to do. I got it back and put in a new ecu, still the same problems. Check engine light said cylinder #1 misfire is it. Also the check engine light is flashing instead of just staying on. The shop checked the timing belt and said its fine, each cylinder has 120-150 compression. They said the fuel injector for cylinder #1 is just dumping to much gas on the first cylinder to. Im clueless on what else to do, any one have any ideas? The car is a 98 2.0 dohc 4x4, automatic w/ 80k miles
When you say "they checked the timing belt" -- what does that mean ?
Your symptoms seem to point to the timing belt and/or timing belt alignment as being the problem -- the timing belt should be replaced every 50-60k miles... they ware, stretch, and sometimes jump a notch on one or both cam shaft gears.
the sportage quit dieing, every other thing is still wrong tho. Im not sure what they meant check it, i took it there to get the timing belt changed, and then called and said it didnt need to be, they checked it
My guess is that the timing belt is original and has never been changed. If you don't know, then, if I were in your situation, I'd just go get one and put it in myself and see what happens -- then you'd know that the camshaft gears are lined up correctly.
I put a new timing belt on, still no go, same problems as before. the kia was barely out of time, i got it dead on with a new belt. It smells like gas bad when it running.. Still no check engine light
help?
the exhaust makes a putting sound, and when im backing up or pulling forward. the car shakes bad from 1200-2400 rpm, after 2500rpm it does fine. When i go up a hill it barely makes it, and when i got it home it died when i put it in park after going up a hill. it idles fine and doesnt shake when in park and neutral
Hi,
Even your cat. converter have been changed it can be blocked, this have been seen before, new parts defective. To check if your exhaust have too much restriction remove the O2 sencor on the manifold. Start the engine, and try to raise RPM over 3500 RPM. It make a lot of noise and the CEL will go on. If this test improve the engine rev. found, if not you have to look elswere.
On mine this permit to find the cause of the poor performance of my Sporty. after a lot of pieces changed.
May be i am in the field but a forum is like a brain storming session, with all the ideas posted.
Based on your description of the problems, I am surprised that the light is not on, although I suppose a plugged up converter -- might -- sneak by the PCM as an issue.
Does the check engine light light up when you initially turn the key to start the vehicle, i.e., are you certain that the light is functional ?
In either case I would suggest that you check for DTC's with a scanner -- preferably with a scanner that can ID "pending" DTC's as well as "set" DTC's.
Finally, you could try tapping the converter with a small hammer a few times to see if that makes any difference.
