my car died yesterday, had it towed to a mechanic. they said that my 1997 kia sportage was a interference engine, and there might be engine damage. I just got the car 14 days ago so i thought everything was fine as i bought it from a mechanic. its a dual cam. but i have been reading that its interference as well as non interference. I am praying there is no engine damage but I really want to know what is the truth if its non interference or the other. Please someone help?
thank you for the responses. Yes i had it towed to a mechanic and he did a diagnostics and said the timing belt was broken. He didnt open it up because then it would have cost me money so I wanted to get all the information i possibly can so i would be prepared.

Bad news (just enter your data for each category)...
I have read the gates theory its say its a interference engine. I was told that was incorrect. I also contacted a kia dealership and was told it was a interference engine as well. but when I looked at the specs from the kia site it said that the pistons would not be affected as all sportages are basically non interferenced engines. Thank you Harry for your feed back. And thank you ron as well, i appreciate the links as well as the kia information.
There's a good few reports on this forum that identify an error on the Gates web site regarding the the type of engine (interference vs non-interference).

Thanks very much... since after readiing this post and sniffing around on the web, it dawned on me that my 02 convertable is overdue for its 3rd timing belt -- pushing 160k at the moment. I guess now I can wait until it warms up a bit here in MA before I deal with it. Thanks again to both of you.
Here is an update on my sportage. It is a non interference engine. and there was no damage to the engine. mechanic said that the belt does not look worn or anything, he said that it was loose and i guess fell off the pulley. so there going to look on why it was loose and maybe there is a break on the bottom. he only looked on the top to see if anything got damaged.
