Angry Transmission problems

Have a 2002 Sportage 4wd 5 speed with 151k miles. It makes a loud whining noise in all gears. The faster I go the louder it gets. It goes away when clutch is pushed. Thought it might be throwout bearing< so I just replaced throwout and pilot bearings, clutch and pressure plate. Put tranny back on last night and still have same problem with the whining. Thinking I need to replace tranny now. Does any one know of a reputable rebuilt transmission dealer? Or does anyone have any ideas of what else it might be?

Thanks,
Chuck

Pushing in the clutch and the noise going away would suggest trany issues. Before I'd toss the trany I'd give the input shaft and bearing a look over as well as the output shaft and bearings.

Sometimes the whine is internal, be it a cluster shaft issue or even a seperate bearing/gear issue and other times I've seen input/output shaft shaft issues. Also low gear lube or worn out gear lube can have a big effect.

A big guess from this vantage point but just some food for thought.

While transmission was out,we inspected the shaft. It didnt look worn and it turned smoothly. We also drained the tranny and put in new fluid.

Hello chasmay,
I am having the same problem with my 98 Sportage. Only it stops whining when I am in 4th gear. Let me know if you come across a cure and I will do the same.
