how do remove the fuel lines from the gas filter??There are no clampson the ends of the lines that I can see ? Is there a special tool? Or do you just pull them out with force??
Thanks, thats exactly what I did. The reason you have to push towards the filter when you press is the that the releases inside the hose will not release filter nipple. I could see that I took the inlet hose from the metal line so I move the filter to have more room to take off the other end.
just a little help for anyone trying it. First thing to do when replacing the fuel filter is to shut the fuel pump off (in the cargo area) then start it and let it die. This will clear the lines of any fuel. Next loosen the band clamp on the filter thats located under the hood on the passenger side. Next get a small screwdriver and there are two holes on opposite sides of the connector lines. Press down on the fuel lines, and press the screwdriver in each hole, the pull it right off.
Just did one wow what a pain. Filter located down next to battery hard to get to. Get small screwdriver push down on front fitting push screwdriver in small hole where ripples are pull up on fitting, should come off, remove clamp bolt, bend clamp apart real wide push filter down under car, take new filter under with you and disconnect other line and install new filter, push back uo to clamp area, put filter in clamp and tighten camp with the 90 degree filter connection straight up, push connector on to new filter, start engine look for leaks, no leaks your done YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS THANKS 01 SPORTAGESTRATUS COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOUR INPUT.

Reason: TO CHANGE THE PS TO 01 SPORTAGESTATUS
I forgot that I had documented this with a couple of pictures, so here you go:
(1) After releasing the "vertical" connection, remove the strap bolt and spread the strap just enough to push the FF to the rear and get the vertical stem through the opening: then just let it drop down
(2) Now just jack up the front passenger side and the length of the remaining attached hose should provide lots of room to deal with the second (horizontal) connection... then just connect the horizontal hose to the new one and slide it back in the strap
NOTE: my new one was slightly smaller in diameter than the original, such that when you tightened the strap bolt the FF would still be moveable... so I just loosened it and stuck a sliver of wood btwn it and the strap -- done.
FYI: Tito's "coat hanger tool" works GREAT -- he posted it after I had already done mine, but his idea was so damn creative that I made one and went out and tried it on the one I had just replaced -- trust me it will take most of the frustration out of dealing with the FF R&R process.

ps: I could not locate the fuel cutoff switch... but very little fuel came out -- if you can not find your cutoff switch, make CERTAIN that the engine is cold when doing this... actually, you won't really be able to remove the vertical connector with a hot engine anyway, since you'll be touching the IM in that process
