Default my 4X4 doesnt work

The 4 x 4 on my 2001 ia sportage has stopped working. When i engage 4 wheel drive ( i have looked at it on a ramp) the wheels turn slightly then stop working, although something down there does turn! If you hold the spinning thing (maybe drive shaft) then the wheel turns.

Any ideas? My local mechanic cant fix it! Anyone near basingstoke fancy a go?

First thing I would check is the vacuum system. The 4X4 is activated by rubber vacuum lines that go to the front wheels. It is always a problem and if you are smart and that is the problem you should replace the units with a Warn hub system.

It could also be the Vacuum line to the tank, the selonoid that activates the system or the switch. All can be repaired.

First find a mechanic that does know something about 4X4's. I had a similar issue with my 2001 kia sportage, however, when engaged worked fine, when in 2WD, had a clicking noise.

So replaced with Warn 4WD, cheaper and easier and the problem was fixed.
I recommend WARN anytime. Warn cost me $400.00, Automatic 4WD would've been 950.00.
Good Luck

you can replace the vacuum hoses for about 10$ more than likely your problem they crack right above the wheel where they meet the metal hose
