Default 1999 Sportage -No Start - please help!

about 3 months ago I bought a 1999 Kia Sportage with 79K. The car ran fine other than a few intermittant stalls and sputters. Then after parking for evening as normal the car would not start in the AM. It will crank but no start. After reading through this forum I have tried several things. When I spray Starting Fluid it still does not fire. I cleaned grounds including the fuel pump ground. Still no start.

Today after some more searching , I found how to access spark plug #1.
I thought in order to check for spark, I could use a timing light. After verifying on another car that the light worked, I hooked it up to the KIA and no timimg flash. Would this be an indication that I have no spark? Even if the timing belt was bad, shouldn't I at least get a flash?

Sorry for the long post but I need HELP. Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Start by verifying that your timing belt is not broken. You can look into the oil filler hole in the valve cover with a flashlight while the engine is being cranked. If you don't see the camshafts turning, you know the belt is broken. I believe the crank and cam sensors determine when the plugs fire. If the belt was broken there would be no input to the cam sensor which is located on the firewall end of the exhaust cam(drivers side of motor).

Yes i would check to make sure the timing belt is still good. I replaced mine at 95000 and i am glad i did it was about to go at any time very worn. They recommend changing it at 60000 miles very possible that it broke.

Default still wont fire!

Thanks to all have helped me.

Fuel side
I havel earned alot about kia's. i used the Global Service and checked the fuel pump and high side filter in engine compartment. When I crank the motor I get gas comming out of the outlet side of the new fuel filter. If I jump B+ to the pump pin in the diagnostic port: fuel galore. I also checked the fuses and changed relay in engine compartment. Also when I spray starting fluid in intake (with Mas Air pipe disconnected), she won't fire.

Spark side
got #1 wire off put in new plug with proper gap: no spark. I then took apart to get to the plugs and coils The Coils looked to be cracked a bit and the plugs look worn but should at least fire and run rough. I tried ti ohm out the coils as detailed in Global service ...not really sure.

Finally I decided to go after the Timimg belt because she does have 80K on her. put new belt in as specified in this forum (THANKS) but still no fire or spark.

I have taken out the cam sensor (fun with gigantic hands like mine) and am waiting for the cash to get a new one also to get the coils and I guess the crank sensor

Please tell me if I have missed anything

I'll tell you one thing I am positive of: the starter cranks like heck! (jinx)

Exclamation Crank sensor

Pull apart the connector for the crank sensor. You have to crawl under the driver side, its up by the bell housing. Spray out both sides of the connector with contact cleaner and put it back together. DO NOT USE ANY GREASE IN THE CONNECTION. If this doesn't work, replace the crank sensor.
