I am new to this site and I am hoping that someone can help me to figure out what is wrong with my 2000 Kia Sportage as I am having some mechanical difficulties with it and I don't know where to turn for help regarding this issue.
I have been noticing that my car has been very sluggish. I have had periods where as I am driving down the highway my speeds will drop down from about 60 to about 45 or lower for short durations and then will pick back up again after a little bit. But it still does not solve the problem as it is difficult to get it up to speeds of around 75, 80 or faster.
I have also noticed that it has had problems climbing hills and that the check engine light has been comming on and off for a while.
I have tried things like changing the air filter, and I have run products like Proguard through the system, but that does not seem to help. We have also changed the Oxygen sensor and we have completely removed the exhaust manifold and re-welded it and at first that seemed to help, but apparently it is back to it's same old self.
I have also noticed that it has been stalling out at times and I can't figure out why it is acting so funny. I have tried to get a Haynes repair manual for it, but with no luck as I am having problems trying to get good information on it.
I am getting worried about it now as I don't have a whole lot of money for repairs right now and my New Mexico Emissions and Tabs are due real soon, but it is going to be needing an Emissions test done and I don't know if it will pass as the emissions test is required in order for me to get new tabs on the car.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be wrong with the car and as to how I can solve this whole problem?
If you have been throwing a CEL (Check Engine Light) it should still be in the computers memory! You should get someone to read the code, most large auto parts stores will do it for free, once you have the code come on back and we can help you out further, DO NOT go and change parts (like O2 sensor) without know if they are the problem, you are just wasting youre money!
There is NO haynes manual, the best (almost only) manual is the Kia on-line tech manual Global Service Way This link should get you there.
Not sure where you live, but a 2000 should be OBDII, an OBDII scanner should cost around $100.00, but you can get codes read for free at most large auto-parts stores, Auto-zone, Pep-boys etc! if you live in the U.S.
If you want to own youre own scanner you can find them also at any auto parts store, keep an eye open for sales etc! and watch what you buy, you just need a code reader, which like I said should be around $100.00 but there are some models out there that cost $400.00 and more.
My next door neighbor said that he did a scan of it and that it was O2 sensor or the fuel pump. We have replaced the O2 sensor and we have taken off the exhaust manifold, re-welded it and put it back on but that has not solved the problem. My next door neighbor is swearing up and down that he thinks it is the fuel pump that is causing the problem.
What is the possibility that it is the fuel pump that is causing the problem and if so then how many are there, where would they be located and how hard or expensive do you think that they would be to replace?
I personally doubt that the fuel pump could be causing the check engine light to come on, but anything is possible. I am just trying to pinpoint the exact problem ahead of time before I spend any money on parts or tools that may not solve the problem and I'm hoping that you may have some good suggestions that would help lead to solving this problem as cheaply as possible.
My next door neighbor is suggesting that I take it to the dealer to have it diagnosed, but that can be pricey and it is often hard to find a good reputable mechanic.
I live in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area and I am still new to the area. I moved there in 2006 from Minnesota. When I came down to New Mexico I came down in a 1990 Oldmobile Custom Cruiser that was basically nickel and diming me to death. During my trip down I had many police officers looking at my car and asking about it as apparently they did not know that Oldmobile made a station wagon. The entire thing was a little nerve racking as I had one cop that keep slowing down while he was in the left lane of the highway, but then he would speed up.
Apparently he was pacing me to try to find out more about the car, but it scared me as I thought for sure that he was going to whip behind me, throw on his lights and pull me over for something that I would have had no idea about.
After I arrived in New Mexico the custom cruiser kept breaking down on me even after I had put a lot of money into it and even having the carburator overhauled and I needed a more reliable car for work and that is why I got the Kia Sportage.
I bought it used from a local dealer and they said that they had done everything to it make it was good and except for this problem where it does not like to pick up power very well and has a tendency of being very sluggish I have not had too many problems with it. So far it has been very reliable.
I am trying to figure out how to get this car fixed as soon as possible so that I can get the emisions test done, get my tabs and get out of Albuquerque as I don't like the area and I need to move on to greener pastures where there is more opportunity for me.
After I got the car I tried to get a haynes manual for the car, but as you pointed out there are none for it. I have also visited the website that you gave me, but it is not allowing me to register for some reason and at the moment I am racking my brains trying to figure out how to deal with this problem quickly as if I don't then it is very possible that the apartment complex where I live at could tow my car and I can't afford that.
I am a OTR truck driver by trade and I am often away from home a lot and at the moment I don't have anyone at home to help me with this, and at the moment I am in the process of trying to bring a girl home that is currently overseas and that says that she loves me and at this moment I am believing her.
If you can think of anything else that may be causing this problem, then I would greatly appreciate it as I am trying my absolute best to make everything work right and at as little expense as possible.
Yeah, the fuel pump could be cutting put, or dropping preasure, causing the engie to sputter, which might throw a misfire code, or a injector trouble code, or a emmisions/evaroative control code.
If it is the fuel pump, then do you think that it would still pass emissions for the state? If it can pass the emissions test, and I can get my tabs renewed, then I can deal with the fuel pump later.
I am worried about passing the emissions test and getting my tabs right now.
