Question Hold Warning light?

I have a 97 Sportage and a few weeks ago the check engine light (solid yellow) and the hold light (blinking yellow) came on. I was reading the manual and it said that the hold indicator "indicates that the Automatic Transmission is in HOLD mode"? That's it. What is this means? Is this bad? Anyone had this problem? Any experts on this subject?

I have the same problem. I took my Kia to my trusted neighborhood mechanic and he read these 2 codes from my 97 Kia Sportage:

P0101

I have the same problem. I took my Kia to my trusted neighborhood mechanic and he read these 2 codes from my 97 Kia Sportage:

P0101 - Air flow sensor warning
P00750 - Shift Solenoid Internal error

My mechanic told me he read these 2 technical postings by Kia:

TT089814-001 from Aug1998
TT029811-001 from Feb 1998

The TT02911-001 publication says something to the effect that the 2 codes are confusing to most technicians because they are unrelated and Kia says it is a wiring problem.

My mechanic said I should take the Kia to the dealership to fix the wiring problem.

I thought the hold light was something that the driver turns on (I know it's via a button on the gearshift in my car)?

The hold light indicates you have pressed the hold button on the shifter. This keeps the transmission in a higher gear than normal which helps in starting out in slippery or muddy conditions. Press the button again and the hold light should go off. The hold button is the lower button on the left side of the Automatic shifter.

Default annoying Hold light!!!

so the same thing is going on in my Sporty.
Blinking hold light, and a steady check engine light.
Yet its running the same, despite the hold light being on and off
it shifts into overdrive like it should. From this topic, I guess its a wiring problem. Did you ever get that fixed? I think I'll just throw some stickers over the lights to get rid of them for now.

So did the dealer fix it for you?
was it just a wiring problem?

Exclamation Engine light, blinking hole and stutturing starter!

Unfortunately I am having the same issue as of lunch time. (VERY Depressing) I have a 2001 Sportage I bought 3 years ago. Never had a real serious problem with it until this year when I have to replace the battery alternator and spark plugs which I was expecting with as much as I drive it. I bought it with 15,000 and I have 86,000 on it now.

But the thing that got me upset is I tried starting it a few times and it wouldnt fire. It sounded like it was turning. I stopped sit for a minute and tried it a few more times before it finally fired. Now the check engine light is on and the HOLD light is blinking.

Is it safe to drive? I love my car and want to know how to do this myself if possible. Work is letting me borrow there truck so I am gonna leave my car here overnight.

I read somewhere that water on the trans controller connector could cause the erratic auto transmission operation. I drove through 4 storms of this weekend. I mean serious down pour till you can't see 10 feet in front of you. It did it again yesterday while I was at work. Then yesterday afternoon. it wouldnt start after two tries then the third it did. So I didn't think anything of it.

sorry for the long message. Any comments to help me out?

Default 97 Kia Sportage Blinking "HOLD" Light

I am having the same problem with my 97 Kia Sportage. Check engine light on and the "Hold" light blinking. Was just checking to see what others may have found out about what the problems were and what had to be done. Hoping maybe my local mechanic can solve it instead of going to the Kia dealership. Thanks for any responses.........

It definately sounds as if water has got into a connection in the wiring somewhere, if you work through any wiring connections under the car or low in the engine bay and seperate them and dry them out you will probably come across what is causing the starting problem. Electrics just don't mix well with water. Best of luck with it.

CJ kid revived this post, unfortunately most of these users don't even log on anymore so they won't benefit from any solutions we find.

Such as the blinking hold lite is the Transmission Control Modules way to tell you that it has generated a transmission trouble code and it is stored in the TCM. You can't pull the codes off of the ECM, you need to get them from the TCM and I don't know how to get the codes from there. Anyone know how to get the codes from the TCM?
