Default Sportage EX 2001 Code P0442

Hello all

Just wondering what to do after seeing that code (P0442) EVAP Emission Control System Leak (small)

What should I be checking for? Would the small leak be near the engine or elsewhere? If only a "real"(unlike me) mechanic can fix this, what am I looking at for price?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

The infamous P0440/P0442 scan codes..... also known as the Gas Cap codes.

These are the most commonly reported codes for the Sporty for the 1998 to 2001 model years.

More times than not, a bad or leaky seal on the GAS CAP is all this is. The gas cap has a rubber seal that contacts the filler nozzle area. That is always the usual suspect. Look for cuts or nicks in that seal. Replace if it looks bad.

There is a pressure building and relief valve built into the Gas Cap. It allow the tank to build pressure to 3psi and relieve pressure if it has a vacuum of greater than 2 inches of mercury.

It is possible that this pressure regulator if you will, to fail and the cap will need replacing.

If you find our think your Gas Cap is ok, then you have many other areas to look at. The code is saying that the Gas Tank is not building pressure to the specified levels with in 2 driving cycles, so you are looking for a leak somewhere in the Evap and or Gas Tank system.

A helpful site is below, put in your specific data about your Kia and choose "Emissions Control System" and "Troubleshooting" to find the related DTC code information.

Global Service Way

Good Luck...

Oh and BTW, this happened to my or actually to my daughters sporty off and on for a month.

Finally figured out it was the Gas Cap and bought a new one from a Kia Dealer. I think is was around $25 if my memory serves me. That was a year and half ago. I think there are now some discount auto-part stores that now carry Gas Caps, might check into that......

You can clear this code by disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds, but it will come back in 2 driving cycles if the leak persist.

Hope this helps.

Yeah that helped alot thanks.

Unfortunately the gas cap looks good and the canister also. I guess I'll have to start by checking the pipe and the fuel line.

How major can this be?

Thanks again for the input and advice

Just purchased a new 2008 sportage and had the same code problem as you. Had to take it into their (useless) shop to get serviced THREE times because the technicians kept saying that it was my fault for not closing the cap properly. They'd reset the "check engine light" warning light and send me home.
Today I took it in once again and received a paper stating that it wasn't the gas cap all along, but the "purge control valve". Lucky that it's under warranty, but I regret buying this piece of sh**.
