I am in Australia and have a 99 plated sportage with a build date of 97 It uses a 2 button remote stamped Kia . I have been unable to locate a new fob except from Kia at a cost of $245 plus $45 to configur it. I am unable to find any unit fitted under the centre console and because 99 onwards uses a 3 button remote I am assuming that this model is different to the 99-02 models . This remote was fitted as standard to all Australian Sportages in 96-97. Can anyone help with any further info,
Are there any learning fobs available in Aust for this car, What frequency does it use? ......Thanks
Since your steering wheel is on the other side you probably have a non-american made Kia. IDK. Maybe someone here will have your answer but, Have you checked the 'net for KeyFob specialists? Google 'keyfob' and start asking questions.
Did Kia give you part numbers for the replacement? That info might help chase one down.
Not all of us drive Kia's (I only work on them), built for America or otherwise (non-american). As you know there is a difference in the way they are made. Sorry for your confusion.
How do I know if my 2000 Kia Sportage requires a wireless remote? I just bought it from a used car dealer and they only gave me 2 keys. Whenever I lock the door, either by key or pushing down the lever, the alarm gets set. I cannot unlock it without setting off the alarm and it will only stop when I put the key in the ignition.

shidapenz,
Have no idea about your situation. I do not think they sold the sporty in the States prior to 1998? But I could be wrong on that one....
Madkison59,
It sounds to me like you very well might have an RKE module. Anyway try double locking or double unlocking at the driver-side keylock. I was told that this will arm or un-arm the alarm system. When I try it, it just give me another beep of the horn but it might still be doing something. And what I mean by double is turn the key to lock or un-lock and all the door locks respond, return the key to middle and then turn it again in the same direction.
It could also be a bad un-lock contact on the key cylinder of that door, try the other side and see if it does it on the opposite side. If pulling and pushing the locking post works the locks on all doors then it is not the switch contacts for the locking post.
Of course if it is the RKE interfering, have you tried disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes????
I took my 2000 Sporty to the Kia dealer and the salesman swarmed me as soon as I drove up. Before I could get my question out about the keyless remote, I was pummeled with questions on how much I was paying, where did I get it, and how I needed to get my timing belt changed immediately or I'd be left on the side of the road (I have 61K on it). I was told that the 2000 models didn't come with RKE (FALSE!!) so it was probably an aftermarket alarm and they couldn't help me. I think he was just ticked that I wouldn't trade in the car for one of his cars. I'll try disconnecting the battery and see if that works.

My daughter bought a used 2001 Sportage about a year ago. She gets the horn-beep when she locks the doors, and the rest of the doors will lock/unlock electrically. I figured there must be some sort of RKE in the vehicle, so I went to a dealer and asked. I gave them the VIN, and after about 15 minutes, they said it didn't come with RKE, and it must have been an after-market add on. Is this their standard answer, or what?
How can I tell for sure if the vehicle came with RKE?
My 2000 Sporty came with a fob, but at the risk of being rude why bother locking it? It's a Kia for cryin' out loud, who's gonna steal it?
It's not so much the fear of someone stealing the car (though I DON'T want to take any chances of that happening), it's what they can take from the car.
My Sportage belonged to my boss, and he had a subwoofer and amplifier in the back. Someone popped the lock on the driver's side, pulled the receiver out of the dash (ruining the dash in the process), and ripped the subwoofer out of the back.
I have all my stuff in boxes in the back of my car, and though it's stuff that's only valuable to me (books, papers, and odds and ends), I'd rather not have someone go in and steal my stuff.
