Default My 4x4 will not work..help!?

Hello all,

I have a Sportage (2000) with a manual gearbox and am struggling to get the 4x4 working. When I select 4x4 mode in either 4H or 4L the indicator light does not come on on the dash and only the back wheels turn (have had car jacked up on ramp and checked this).

When 4x4 is selected i can see the front drive axel turning but wheels do not turn at all.

Can anyone who know's anything about this sort of this please help??Someone mentioned to me that it might be something to do with the "automatic locking hubs"???

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you can help,

Thanks,

yep. auto locking hubs are out, more specifically the hose for them. replace the hose and they should work. but..... to not worry about fixing them ever agian replace with warn manual hubs or warn automechanical hubs. also check the bearins to see if they are still good. they have a tendancy to go bad if those hoses are rotted off for a long time.

Same problem with mine. Will be putting on manual hubs soon. This seems to be a common problem with the sportages up through the 2000 models.

Just replaced the vacumn hoses last night, just in time for a foot of snow. Works like a charm. I will be putting on the Warn manual hubs in the spring.

If your vacuum hoses were craked there is a good chance they drew outside air/water/dirt into the front hubs. You might want to change the front bearings when you replace the hubs because of this!

Okay gurus I have a better one for you. In 4WD mode my light comes on but it doesn't seem like the front wheels were doing any work. In example this morning I tried to pull out of the parking lot but the rear wheels kept spinning out of control. Also last few days even in 4WD mode my vehicle was still fishtailng here and there. Especially when I tried to leave an intersection.
Any ideas?

The problem is all 4 tires MUST be the same size or that is what will happen. Go back into 2 wheel mode and you will find the problem stops. Sometimes unbalanced airpressures between front and rear can cause this problem because it causes the tire size to change.
