Default Fuel Economy

Hello,
I just picked my girl friend up a 01 Kia Sportage. Its a automative with 4 wheel drive. It has only about 36,000 miles on it as well. What did after i bought it was had a 30,000 mile tuneup done to it. Basics. Air filter, Sparkplugs, and trasmission flush. My concern is I bought it so she could get good fuel economy but the thing is only getting about 20 mpg. Does anyone have any ideas. And what is the norm for these vehicals. If this is all I'm going to get I'm going to have to get rid of it.

Thanks,
Sam

that is about normal. i think the weak spot in the gas milage for the sportage is the transmission

well that really bites. When i bought it the sales man said it would be no lower then 25mpg. Figures.... Well if anyone has any ideas on how to get more out of it I'm all ears. Whats funny is I have a 01 ford explorer with the 4.0 6 cylinder. I get around 21-22 mpg. Doesn't make any sense.

Thanks,
Sam

not much you can do except try to add horse power with out adding a super charger/turbo/displacement because any mod to an engine that does not include those may infact increase gas mileage. all disgussed in the lower part of the thread below. avoid all swirl devices (like the tornado), throttlebody spacers, fuel magnets. they all are bunk and a wast of money.

You could try Ethos fuel reformulator. I have used it and it does work, I used it on a blazer and it added about 50 miles to the tank. This is not a octane booster, it actually makes your engine burn gas more efficiently by pushing gas molecules apart, at least that is what it says. I just put 1 oz in the tank and 1 oz in the oil as directed. I am not a salesman and I do not endorse this product but I have used it and for $20 you can treat 160 gallons. This is the site: Ethos Fuel Reformulator You can get some or not It is your choice. They also have a Formula racing team that I beleive uses the product in their Ethos formula car.

fuel additives in a formula race car? strictly against the rules.

about the fuel mileage, sorry but thats the automatic for you. the manual trans sportage will get significantly better mileage. and as a bonus, its also much faster.

I understand that fuel mileage w/ an automatic equipped vehicle will be less than w/ a standard shift. However, I have a 1995 Sportage, 2.0 L, SOHC, 5 speed, 4x4, and the gas mileage sucks on it also. It also gets about 20 mpg. I expected about 25. That I could live with. My daily drive consists of about 25-26 miles of open 4-lane highway. No lights, very light traffic. Also, I use Amsoil synthetic oil, have synthetic lube in the diffs and transfer case. Definately should get better than 20 mpg. Thanks for letting me rant. David

One thing that may be hurting the milage is the high revs at highway speeds. My 2002 is over 3500 RPM at 70 mph. That is about 1500 RPM more than other vehicals I drive. The only way to deal with that would be different differentials and that would not be cheap even if there were units available. I don't believe you could put an overdrive between the transmission and transfer case on these: they are bolted right together.

Has anyone gotten better milage after replacing the catalytic converter? The sluggish power makes me thing there may be blockage there. Thanks for any suggestions. Paul
