blown water pump

Wife's 1999 sportage 4w/d broke down on the road. says she heard a metal rattling sound then saw smoke (steam)? Engine would't turn over.
Found water pump to be bad and replaced it. Not leaking, it cranks but won't start! Suggestions/feedback? I think I need help with this one.

is the Check engine light lit on the dash? If so you need to get the codes read.

Not enough information given at the moment to even have a guess.....

Does it fire and not run?
Have you checked all the electrical connections (easy to miss connecting one up)?
Fuel/spark OK?

Any other information that may be relevant???

Lights comes on but doesn't it come on when you're trying to crank it anyway. I thought maybe I didn't time it correctly although I followed the recommended method... popsitioned the timing gear then the intake and exhaust gears. Do you think I should try timing it again? It's getting fuel, haven't checked the spark. I'll double check the electrical connections. Thanks for the help.
