Sputtering and Backfiring?!?!

I am in desperate need of help! My car has been acting fine and then all of the sudden this morning it started sputtering and making a popping noise and the check engine light came on. We tried putting fuel injector cleaner in it and also checking and adding oil and such. I please need some help on trying to figure this out! Thanks

Sorry I guess I need to add that it is a 2000 model sportage. I know nothing about cars so any help would be great!

If the CEL came on get the codes read, this can be done at almost any parts store. Once you have the codes come on back and we can help you further.

btw. when was the timming belt changed last? with a 2000 model youre over due unless you changed it already.

well i had the same problem with my 99 model (not sure if this will help) but i ended up changing the plugs and plug wires and it has be ok since

My husband wants to try and change the plugs and wires but my car did not come with a book, where can we get instructions on how to do that?
