If you have the DOHC engine you can breathe easy (non-interference )

If you have the SOHC the Jury is out, technically not meant to be a non-interference, but no one I know from other forums has ever broken/bent valves. May have changed design slightly mid model????

If it is a burnt valve you may be able to have the damage ground out, failing that you should only need to replace the bad valve and maybe get a new seat pressed in for it.

Have a chat to your local ford dealer about valves, the same engine (stroked) was used in a 2.2-2.3 liter(?) form in some models of the Ford Probe. Take a valve in and see if he can match it.

So is it a SOHC? A broken belt does not necessarily mean you HAVE done damage, only that you MIGHT HAVE done damage, depending on where in the engine revolution the engine (cam system) stopped.

If it is a DOHC then I can GUARANTEE it is NOT an interference engine, and that with the exception of a valve failure on its own, there should be no reason you could not slip a new belt on and away you go.

If your research is that the DOHC is interference then you haven't seen the Kia Manual (Stated "NON-INTERFERENCE). More than likely the Dealer has seen you coming and is going to extract you wallet through any bodily orifice he can find...

I really HATE ppl getting conned by dealers

How many Jeeps have pulled my Kia out of a tight spot? Zero

How many Jeeps HAS my kia pulled out of a tight spot? Two

Two may not sound like a big number.... unless you were the drivers of those jeeps! And yes one was a cherokee, and Spleen is splet with a 'P'.

OK I'm not here for baby games...... but anyway I pulled my head hey I had nothing better to do. The #1 cylinder did hit the exhaust valves there are clear strike marks on the valves and perfect marks on the pistons. The valves don't apear to be bent, but who knows how hard the hit. I'm not taking any chances. And looking at the cams the valves are not all the way open either. I'm not the smartest guy in the world but if they were open all the way I'm sure the damage would have been great. And buy the way it is a 2002 sporty convetable with the mazda motor in it.

The world's most trusted name in belts, hoses & hydraulics | Gates Corporation here is the link to the gates site they say that if there is a * near the aplication then it is an interference motor. Why would gates lie? And with holding evidence in my hand.
