Hey all

I'm new to this forum and new to driving a kia and was hoping for some help.

I recently bought a 2002 kia sportage 5 spd. Within a few weeks we noticed when the vehicle had been running for about 15-20 it started getting hard to shift to first and second gear and as it ran longer became harder..... The tranny fluid level and hydraulic clutch have been checked and are okay.

It still has powertrain warranty but the service guy at the local dealership is a major ****. He tried every trick in the book just to try ans stop me from bringing it in for a look and suggested just about every way it might not be warrantied. He keeps suggesting I drive it an extra 30 miles to the next clossest kia dealership just to have it looked at?????

After bringing it in he claimed to have test drove it twice and found no probs which has to be a lie. It looks like I'm now going to have to take time off work to drive it around for the day and then bring it to them and show them the problem....

Anyone have any tips on dealing with them on the warranty issues and also has anyone sen probs like this with the tranny and might suggest what the issue could be?

Thanks,

Sounds like when the clutch heats up it is not completely releasing. Could be bad pressure plate/clutch assembly. I would bleed the clutch master/slave cylinders first and then recheck.

HVAC

Thanks a lot for the quick for the reply.

The bleeding has been done to no avail which is why I suspect you may be right or worse....

I'm curious. If the issue is only when its hot could that be caused by air in the hydralic clutch lines? Shouldn't it happen all the time in that case?

Lots of KIA owners on this forum. Anyone read the warranty fine print and have tips on making sure this gets fixed? I was agast at the way the service guy tried every way possible to skirt looking after me in any way even though I have full drive train warranty and it should be covcered...

I do not believe the warrenty covers wear items like the brakes and clutch disc. try another dealer if you can and be nice. You can get a lot more with a very little sugar than you can with a pound of salt.

I almost have to take it to this dealership because the other one is soooo much further away and as per this post its very hard to drive for long periods (and I'm afraid it might be doing damage)

Even if its not under warranty I need it fixed.

Default New clutch?

Okay so thanks to the KIA road side coverage I had it towed for free to a dealership that is much much better. Applewood in Surrey BC.

Their mechanic test drove it and bled the master cylinder again (which was already done) and he said it made it a little better which I'm sure it didn't but he is recomending a new clutch. It has 74,000 on it.

I don't have an issue paying for a clutch but I'm concerned that is not the issue.... I've had clutches wear out before and symptoms were nothing like this. Is there any way for them to know without opening up the tranny? How should I proceed?

Thanks!

Well after speaking with the dealer I bought it from they have agreed to install a new clutch at cost for parts so 500 instead of 1200 Kia wanted. It has about 74,000 on it and I plan to drive it for a while so I'm not too miffed about that now. Either way I think the clutch would be going soon (anyone know what the approx average for an 02 clutch would be?). If that is not it as far as I am aware everything else in the tranny would be warrantied still maybe except for the clutch hydralics but I can do that kinda stuff by myself.

I'll post and let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks,
Try taking him for a ride in the vehicle to show him the problem, get out of the drivers seat halfway, and make him drive it home. Bit hard to blame you or your driving style if he is having the same issues.

Default It gets better

The vehicle was towed to the dealer I bought it from since they were going to replace the clutch that three KIA dealership mechanics said was broken at cost. Both KIA and my dealer bled the cluch master, slave (the whole system). The parts didn't arrive in time that friday so it was going to have to wait till Monday so I took the vehicle home for the weekend (Still fine for short trips). When I drove off the lot the clutch had never felt as good as it felt now. No hard shifiting just smooth movement. I ended up driving all over downtown to see if it was in fact fixed and this nightmare was over and it seemed to be. Oddly though by Sunday it was starting to get hard to shift again. Slowly but surely.... From the looks of things the issue is likely the master or slave cylinder. I can't find any leaks in the system so I can't reallys ee what else it could be if bleeding it makes it okay for a couple days.... Thoughts?
