99 Sportage automatic. 130,000 miles. The car starts fine and idles fine but when I put it in drive and give it gas, it wants to die and eventually stalls out. I can rev it with out it stalling and the idle is slightly rough but not to bad. It does this when its engine is cold and hot. Any ideas where I might start checking on this problem?

ps I dont hear the fuel pump hum when I turn the key to the ON position.

Without knowing more details, a general tuneup may be a good start. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, and other maintenance items listed in the book. If all of those basic things are good....we can move on.

spark plugs changed 5k miles ago. No leaks in the valve cover so I left that alone. I had trouble with a misfire but I replaced all the coils and wires and that cured that problem about 6k miles ago. oil and filter was just replaced. After some searching I see that the fuel pump and EGI (I dont know what EGI stands for)relays go bad, would that cause this problem?

I guess the other leads to follow would be...air delivery/filter, fuel delivery/filter/pressure/injector cleaner,.....

I guess there was no engline light on or you would have mentioned it. It may have come on at one time and gone off leaving a code stored in memory. You can get this checked for free at a parts store.

I would think if it was a fuel pump thing it would either run or not run. I dont know what a EGI is either. I know EGR for exhaust gas recirc. but not egi.

If the fuel is good and the spark is good you may have an ecu type problem meaning one of the sensors sensing something (right or wrong) and delivering the wrong info to the computer,..thus....either too rich, too lean, mis-timed ignition,..etc....

It's times like this you wish the red light was on to give you a clue....

Stick around someone else may have ideas.....

Thanks for the replies. This car has a mind of its own. I went out right now and started it and gave it a few revs and put it in reverse and held it there, no problem, put it in drive and held it there, no problem. I said "what the heck" and decided to take it for a drive and see if it still stalls again. Guess what, it ran perfectly. I know this problem is gonna come back so Im still open to suggestions. I need to replace the fuel filter since it hasnt been changed for about 30k miles, maybe thats the cure?? Who knows, but for now, im back on the road. For how long? Nobody knows!! Stay tuned
