Unhappy

Ok ... so my car was running REALLY rough i.e., when I started it, the whole thing would shake. Then my husband asked me "how" I start it. He suggested that I step on the gas first, then turn the key.

Since doing that, it has not been running rough - AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW OFF!

Does the Check Engine light generally turn itself off? I'm nervous about that.

I think the light is on only if the fault is present. If it does flash and then go out, the fault is stored in a memory for future retrieval by a tech.

Generally speaking, the Check engine light is for emission related items. ie fuel delivery, ignition, exhaust, etc. This light is only an idicator of a fault in this system somewhere.

Yes it is safe to drive.

If it was the Oil Light or coolant/temp light...that is a different story as you could do serious damage to the car.

With the CEL you are good to drive as long as the car will run. But get it checked out when you get a chance.
