My 99 Kia Sportage recently developed a strong fuel odor on the outside of the vehicle when it is not running, I can also smell it inside if the engine is off. I haven't noticed any problems with the performance, it starts, runs and shuts off normally. When it was sitting for about a week and I went to start it and black smoke blew out the exhaust pipe, like an over-rich condition. The fuel odor seems stronger towards the back near the rear tires. There is no wet spots on the ground so it doesn't appear to be leaking. ofAny Ideas?

Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me and after many tests and lots of time and money spent I found out all I needed was a new gas cap.
