Welcome LOLO.

I moved your topic here because you were asking about a specific model.

Enjoy this great forum.

This is a first for me so am not sure what i am doing. Anyhow my wife and i own a 2002 sportage with hard use and we have had absolutely NO trouble with ours. Am 55 and have lots of cars and this is one of the best so far. It does have issues though as reasearching will bring out to you. Again we use our vehicle for mail delivery and have had NO problems at all.

I had the same problem with my Wife's 4 cyl Wrangler, it was a bad Cat. The element inside broke loose and would block the exhaust from coming out. It would happen after it was drive for awhile or on hard excelleration. Check the cat. Also did you check the ignition control module? The guy to TT is Axe Man, he helped me out before and seems to know "too much" about Sportages, He's the Sportage Yoda!

Were the 2 ignition coils and 2 spark plug wires replaced too? If not then replace them before going any further.

There is no separate ignition module. It is part of the ECM. It almost never fails and shouldn't be considered unless a last resort.

Chances are the "pre-heat" cat convertor, which is bolted directly to the exhaust manifold, has collapsed internally and is blocking the exhaust. Only way to find out is to unbolt it and check it. At the same time you MAY find a crack in the exhaust manifold by #4 cylinder. The only fix for this is replacement.
