hi all-- I have a high mileage(165,000) 2002 4wd auto sporty that has been flawless recently after I got the new relays and all of sudden today it developed a dropped cylinder/miss especially at low rpm combined with a flashing cel--- what to look for? I know i need and obd2 reader and I remember that aquanaut said there was a beauty available on either amazon of ebay but which? and a friend has a reader and is coming by tomorrow but I am trying to get ready for some shade tree work and I'm thinking maybe plugs etc. any help is appreciated

Get the codes read. Check for vacuum leaks and loose connectors. That seems to be the easiest things to do first. Not sure what relays you received/installed.
On some models a flashing CEL means a cylinder is not firing, or getting gas. This happened on my chevy and it turned out I had left a injector unplugged.
Just my 2cents worth. Good luck

... On some models a flashing CEL means a cylinder is not firing, or getting gas...
True.

Beside checking the Fuel injectors, I kindly suggest you to Check the ignition Coils.

Kind Regards.

Elm327 + smartphone app is cheapest way to read codes. I had your exact symptoms when one of my coil packs went bad. You need the codes to know which cylinder though. Generally flashing cel = misfire

Also a FLASHING CEL usually means BAD misfires... This can cause damage to the catalytic converters if you continue to drive the vehicle... (that's why the FLASHING to get your attention!)...

If you haven't replaced...
Plugs, coil packs, and wires (if used) at 165k and at 13yrs old it wouldn't hurt to do so as time, mileage and the environments do them in...and keep on top of replacing the timing belt every 60k miles (or 5yrs)... and of course the FAMOUS "MAIN" and "IGN" relay failures...

The Sportage has been an amazing model going back to 1995 and a great many are still on the road (if you don't live in NY State...their salt kills all cars)...

I never did the ignition relay just main and fuel pump. time for ignition also?
the strange thing about this occurrence is/was the motor was really lively until this............ it would do an easy 5000rpm on the highways on the one, two shift......never drove it hard in third and fourth. After friend and obd2 readings
i will post back. On another note i was quoted $1000 for timing belt water pump and two tensioners/idlers and All Data or similar said it was 6 hours labor thoughts?

gotta cruise-- see my previous posts about main and fuel pump relays, it was a intermittent no start issue-- fuel pump relay was the problem but it took a while to obtain the correct ones --only one in the state of florida last year, and rock auto as well as napa had incorrect ones - all has been good since with the exception of the start of this miss yesterday

Ok, got it - thought it may have been related.

Agree w/ the excellent advise above - would work the misfire code, it you find the coil pigtail lead to the motor harness is brittle or coil pack connectors suspect, would replace it at time of service,

if no joy after ignition components, then would suspect fuel injection, pre-Cat converter, static mechanical timing..

If timing belt is old / or mileage is over 75,000 on current belt, static mechanical timing check may warrant a higher priority on the list, -and- pre-Cat check (symptom of flashing CEL is collapsed pre-Cat. converter / exhaust system restriction..)

Hope the repair is minor, please keep us posted how it goes for you,

Regards,
GottaCruise

"2002 4wd auto sporty"

Another thought - I would also check all vacuum lines, including the 4x4 solenoid vacuum connection at the lower rear of the Intake Manifold, and would check the PCV valve and hose..

Went through this on the wife's '00 Sporty last fall tracking down an uneven idle / slight miss.

found problem

opened up my sporty today to start plug and coil replacement after confirmed #3 cyl misfire following this excellent step by step tutorial link......

4x4Wire TrailTalk Forums: READ FIRST IF YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS

the plug wire from the coil on #2 that goes to #3 plug was corroded inside the coil connection (condensation?).................but since I'm in there, it gets both coils and two plug wires, 4 plugs and MAYBE a valve cover gasket that I ordered from Rock Auto (plug wells are dry) parts arrive Wed - will post back on out come Thanks to all for replies....big help!

I just bought a 2001 Sportage w/ 151,000. Had the same issues as you did. The good thing was this vehicle was well maintained by the daughter's Dad, who is a mechanic. The plugs and coils had just been changed and the o2 sensors replaced and fuel pump and injector recently replaced. The misfires and all the fuel problems and no power were all due to the Mass Air Flow Sensor. the funny thing was there were no codes the sensor, just the problems it caused. Bought it at he local parts place 78 + $40 core charge. Cant figure out why the didn't sell just the sensor but I'm not complaining. Run great now!!!!!
