Few questions guys. What model is the 5 speed for a 2000? Same question about the auto? Example would be like a th400 or 4l60e ect. What's the model of them?

What would be better in the long run for reliability and offroad? I'm coming from a 5 speed so it's not a worry. My bigger concern is which is truely better?

Finally picked one up today. 2900 before tax & licensing, seems to be a decent price out by my. SoCal. Most on lots are going for 3500-5k. Kkb Suggest a 4600 sell price.
1998, 86k. 4x4 pretty darn clean inside & out. 1 owner but I don't think it has cruise control. :(
Hoping it has the 28spline axles. I know 98 was the year they switched them from 26 to 28. I'll pull it apart in the next week or so see. I plan to weld the rear diff & buy 5.38s and a front locker from picorp@hanmail.net. They are "producing" rear 5.38s and should be available mid February.
I come from jeeps lol. 3-4" lift on 235s front and rear locked will serve me well. As well as a few small performance mods I haven't seen posted yet, although not a new idea in general. Hopefully boost the performance & mileage a bit.

Tonight I dumped some techron injector cleaner into the tank treats 15 gallons I've got about 8 gallons in it. Figure more concentrated. Got the oil changed. And am now painting over the clear brake light bulbs. Clear bulb in a red housing lights up pink lol. So I tint the bulbs with red vht nightshade so they light up red vs pink
As well as the turn signal bulb, I coat with a high temp silver. It still lights up amber but it doesn't reflect orange in the clear housing. Gives it a clean simple look. A few free mods for now to make it my own lol :)

Today I did some maintenance. I seafoamed it and found a few exhaust leaks. Either manifold gaskets or a cracked header. Will find out tomorrow.
I did the valve cover gasket since it was leaking at the edges slightly, none in the plug valley though. I did Rtv the "valley" so it shouldn't leak oil into the plugs though, just extra insurance. Tossed in some NGK iridiums at a .039 gap. New napa gold fuel filter & air filter. Ported my throttle body today as well. Pretty decent gains for an hour or so worth of work. I went party far on it, done some porting before and had a good idea behind what I wanted.
I also "looped" the coolant lines so the hot coolant doesn't pass through the throttle body anymore.

I'll try to post pics in a few. Part throttle response is much improved, as well as full throttle. And it sounded a lot healthier breathing up high now. 0-45 seems like it needs less throttle position for the same get up and go.
Bigger gains are from about 55-65mph cruising, then flooring it. The acceleration was sub-par before. Especially reaching 85-90mph it seemed to just lag along if you kept going, slowly climbing. Now it really does just zip right up to 95mph or so. I didn't push much past that. No need.

I also noticed deleting the "black box" off the manifold increased intake noise slightly & only when wide open throttle, but also seemed to help it accelerate quicker. It also seem to lag a bit more around 45-55mph at partial throttle. Like just cruising around town, it seems to want to lag just in that area to me. These were all back to back test done today.
FWIW, I kept my black box off as it's less clutter under the hood when you need to do stuff.

Greetings Welded Sporty,

re: resonator (aka "black box") on the metal Intake Plenum creating a flat spot in acceleration, noticed that also here when "testing", put it back on promptly.

Guessing that is due to it's position directly across from the IAC valve.. The resonators prior to the airbox can be safely deleted - running a replacement air intake tube into the stock air box here, without issue.

re: 85-90mph, smiling at that - the Sporty here is locked in 4x4 mode, 95% of the time, 45mph max. / secondary road travel is the regime here until (June?) the snow resides..

Congrats on the purchase, reading with interest - please keep us posted w/the mods,

Regards,
GottaCruise
