2002 Sportage Misfire Update Issues
Its been about 4 to 5 months since having posted any further questions regarding my sportage's misfire issues. I am sad to say that this update is not going to tell you its resolved. Let me catch you up where I left off with my attempts.
Plugs (gapped at 28-31)
coil wiring harness
Upper fuel filter
Checked the lower fuel filter and cleaned it as thought it was a fuel delivery issue.
Prior to all these replacements had a "solid" check engine light. Codes that came back were 300, 301, 302, 303 and 304 (all misfires). After the replacement and for the next few months ( Had come to wits end trying to resolve this) only had 300 and 303, but now while driving would get a "blinking" check engine light. Learned that this meant the engine was dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter. As I only have one vehicle and drive about a 100 miles a day in Texas heat for my job, continued checking to resolve the check engine but still had to drive it. Was getting about 16 miles to the gallon and noticed that it had no problem starting cold, but when hot it took more and more cranks to get it going. Also started smelling a strange ordor which I later determined to be be the extreme heat of the catalytic converter. Cranking after driving it became worse and worse, Changed out my plugs and went to autozone who stated that the gapping for the plugs on there computer showed .44. Well that simply made my car run worse so it purchased a new set and reinstalled them at 28. I also switched my coils to determine if it was a bad coil. Started it up and for the first time I had no check engine light. I was so estatic. That lasted for about 15 miles and then it came back on.
Had the check engine light check and was surprised that now I had only one code which was 302. I thought this strange as I had switched coils and really never had a problem with Cylinder 2 except for in the begining. It has been Cyclinder 3 where the issue has mainly been. Puzzuled as to why.
I plan to replace my catalytic converter this week with an after market single stage converter which I have been quoted will cost 175 to 240. I am hoping that this will resolve many of the issues I am having, but need advice on converter replacement and about why I am having a new issue with Cylinder 3.
Any and all comments or advice is greatly appreciated.
