So i was driving the other day and my 2000 4x4 sportage didnt feel right when i would give it gas. Seemed to have lost power.

I got to work not thinking much about it but when i came out to go home it wouldn't run.

No power what so ever CEL was on couldn't get it over 40 mph and it would take a few miles to get it there honestly would make it to about 20mph in about a mile then would take forever to get any faster.

Very rough idle also got home read the code and had a P0343 which was
Camshaft Position Sensor A Bank 1 Circuit High Input.

Had the timing belt replaced about 25000 miles ago all Factory kia parts

Think it would be the belt or the sensor?

Makes me not think the belt would be the fact that the CEL didn't come on the whole way to work (about 30 miles) but still ran decent just felt like it was missing a little power. But when i came out from work and started it the CEL came on and it wouldn't run for nothing.

Oaky tore into it today the timing belt is just fine hasn't slipped and looks good.

Noticed on the drivers side rear valve cover gasket the hose that comes out and connects to the intake pipe was split and had oil all over the camshaft position sensor not sure if this has anything to do with my problem but will find out.

Next after i get the front put back together i am going to take out the camshaft sensor and see if i can have it checked to see if its good or not.

Hate to spend $110 on one when its not bad.

If anyone has any other ideals let me know thanks

im having the same thing with my '99 sportage 4wd. I've been chasing the problem around the engine for quite some time now. replaced the crankshaft pos sensor, camshaft pos sensor, checked the timeing belt/timing, replaced the coilpacks, replaced the spark plugs, valve cover gasket, and battery. Im currently getting the same error code, P0343.

the dealership told me a while back that i needed a new crank pos sensor, but the code i was getting was on the CAM pos sensor, so i replaced the cam 1st, along with the coilpacks, valve cover gasket, and sparkplugs. no more error codes after that, but it still wouldn't run, so i replaced the crank pos sensor and then the CEL came on and i started getting the P0343 code.
I'm at wits end and dont know what to do other than take it to the dealership and pay through the nose. I'm broke after all that chasing around the bad part.
keep me informed on what you find please

Welcome to the forum.

The camshaft sensor error is often displayed when that signal is out of synch with the crankshaft sensor, and this often occurs when the timing belt has jumped a tooth or two.

I know you mention that the timing has been checked, but I'd double check it.

OK Thanks Ron.
Pulled the exhaust yesterday havent worked on it for about 4 months now.I had heard about the cats being stopped up and causing others lots of problems. The exhaust maifold had several large cracks:( in it (posibly meaning the cats stopped?)and 1 of the cats was real bad looking.I am going to look for a manifold this week and will recheck the belt this weekend.
Anyone know where to find a good used exhaust manifold at checked Ebay but no luck Kiaparts.com wants $145:mad: but dont want to pay that much.
Thanks for any Help :)

This is specific to the Sportage:
-------------------------------
You have to do diagnostics for P0343 - the code may be valid, it may be a side-effect of a worn woodruff keyway / deformed crankshaft snout ..

To fully rule out the bad keyway involves exposing the timing belt / removing the timing belt / removing the harmonic balancer / removing the crank gear to check the woodruff key, the crankshaft snout, the inside of the crank gear..

Hooking up a vacuum gauge and checking for (low vacuum) may aid in determining if this is the problem, hooking up a live data scanner in conjunction with a timing light and observing physical (advanced timing) readings at the harmonic balancer with vehicle at idle, may also help indicate this being the issue..

--
above said, hooking up a vacuum gauge and checking vacuum vs. expected on the Rio may indicate a (mechanical) issue, vs. a sensor issue.. If you post back some readings, will try to help.

Different way to check for bad keyway is pull #1 plug and put a long screwdriver in the hole. Turn engine over using a socket on the crank bolt. Watch as the screwdriver moves up or down. At it's hightest point TDC should be indicated. I found a bad keyway on a 2000
Sportage this way. Scewdriver was moving down when TDC lined up at crank pulley. It was off around 30 degrees and would not start. If you are off only 10-15 degrees you wold be way down on power
