To all KIa owners--What ever you do, change your timing belt prior to reaching the suggested 60 k change.Perferably at 50k. Our local Kia dealer wants $500 and insists on a new idler tension pully and a water pump. The cost then nears the $1000 mark.Kias are like cheap Ink jet printers--they rob you in the replacement cartridges. Assume the normal milege 240k-that's $6000 dollars in Kia timing belt repair bills-life of the kia car :^(
Back to Timing belt change--My Kia did not break the belt but stripped a bunch of teeth, at68k, every value (16) bent. The head is very expensive to replace or repair-very time consuming and problematic. Kia engineers forget to make it easy for repairs. If you can rid your doomed car--get rid of it. The timing belt is forced to operated at exterme levels--thin and pushes two cams and worse 16 values. Suggestion to Kia---how about making the sprokets and belts wider,to take the load--you finks :^(
After having acquired a used head ($650), and KIA wanted $68CDN for a belt, the posted instructions appear to be easy, hell no!
Between the two cam sprokets, the author does not say,the pullys spring back from the timing marks and using two wrenches and 6 hands is a must.
The top belt portion must not sag and is really not for the novice.
Still speeding two weeks on the sucker,rIo sputters and kicks and the timing little off.Don't get fooled by some posters-it's an easy-1 to 2 job.
The dents in the cam sprockets-very misleading. Why aren't they directly over a notch on the cog sprocket? You would think, that KIA engineers would have matching hole inserts for alinment purposes ,by way of removel dowels, once job done.
To help some folks, to remove the pump, gen ,air belts and covers, put a jack lift under the eng pan and remove the eng support and disconnect the lower tranie and engine 4 bolts for lifting engine at angle. Must have is a electric impact gun for the main crank bolt. The generator belt adjustment is another removal/placement headache.
The belt placement onto the sprockets, appears to be another hell event--Your tould--don't bend the belt or kink it---yaah!
My next car will be a non-rubber timing belt car--Kia nice car but never again George in Toronto-never again--too dangerous being stranded on the highway
