Hi. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong here? I've replaced so many parts I'm about to drive into a telephone pole!! I'm having an issue with my lights & gear shift. It's a 2001 Kia Sportage 4X4. When putting the vehicle in park it sometimes won't release. Blows a fuse. I replace the fuse & the vehice shifter works fine, after that. But blows the fuse quite often. Why? what causes this??
Then, the problem with my lights: I have replaced the Daytime running light module as it was burnt out. The new one worked till I parked at a store. Then the problem with the shifter (stuck in park fuse blew, I replaced the fuse there on the spot) got in the vehicle and I had no turn signals. Started homeward. stopped in town to buy another part I was suggested to buy (a flasher?) did that, got vehicle homeward again stopped for a coffee at a drive threw, vehicle shift stuck in park AGAIN fuse blew, replaced fuse AGAIN, all lights but dash lights now working :( :( ...... WHAT THE HECK IS CAUSING THIS!!!!! The shifter gets "stuck in park" a fuse blows, I replace it good to go a bit again. What is going on??
The lights take fits when this happens, sometimes I have all lights but the dash lights, other times I have all lights but no turn signals, other times all lights but then no dash and high beams! I am SO FRUSTRATED!!
PLEASE! can ANYONE HELP!!

If the vehicle was here..

* As a sanity check, all rear Stop Lamp bulbs & sockets s/b checked for corrosion, also check & clean G400 ground point @ Rear driver pillar (in addition to G200 ground point, lower driver side kick panel below fuse box, and G201 ground point - passenger lower kick panel) examine the brake switch (above brake pedal), and all front passenger cabin stop / turn signal wiring under dash s/b checked for any 'aftermarket' wiring modifications or issues w/ wiring jacket,

RADIO wiring s/b checked, and considered suspect, if aftermarket - REVIEW ALL WIRING / DISCONNECT AS NEEDED TO TEST FOR POSITIVE EFFECT..

Park position switch & Shift Interlock solenoid under trans shift face plate should be checked: remove center console back to cigarette lighter plug, expose shift console, check for metal (loose change), corrosion, and / or accumulated crud in that area, clean -> address as needed..

It would be helpful to know (which) fuse is blowing constantly, that may help to narrow down the issue ..

From my experiences with my 02 Sportage, the wiring is crappy. The connectors and wiring plus grounds can be a mess.

Use a multimeter and set it to continuity or 20 Ohms. Locate each ground. Front lamp/turn signal grounds located in inner fender corners under hood. Hold either probe on the ground while the other probe is on one of the following (check each one); neg battery terminal, engine block/intake manifold, and chassis. The ohm readout should be in the ballpark of .6 - .8. Typically, I have to check them multiple times to get a good reading with my cheap meter. Do not check readings on paint but on solid metal.

Next, place one probe on the neg battery terminal, and the other on the engine, then the chassis. The reading should also be near .6. There is a ground wire that is on the battery tray to engine. Be sure that is there. Mine was off. A poor ground can cause fuses to blow and all types of strange issues like what you mentioned. Check the interior grounds (hint: download Sportage service manual).
