Hi, new Sportage owner. Trying to sort out a few small items on it, really enjoy it. 2000 4x4. My parking brake doesn't do much. I can pull it all the way up, and it's tightening the cables, but won't stock the truck from rolling. It's a manual transmission so I'd like it working properly.
I have tried tightening the little nut down by the brake handle, no difference.
I tightened both brake cylinder wheels in the back until the wheels had some resistance, but still not enough to stop it from rolling.
If you have tightened the adjuster nut inside on the e-brake all the way down to bottom, chances are you either need that cable,
inspect the pivot bracket underneath (where the left/right rear cables connect), the area where the cable sheath enters the passenger compartment - any fraying, etc. replace that cable first.
If that doesn't fix it..
pulling the rear drums, disconnecting the left/right cables from the e-brake pivot, and pulling each from the front pivot bracket to ensure no binding or fraying are the next steps I would take if the Sporty was here.
* When tightening the e-brake adjuster nut, use a 2nd wrench at the cable base to make sure the cable does not 'twist' when tightening - that will fray the new cable quickly.
Thanks, I have tried it with the nut most of the way in, I'll make sure to try to bottom it out. It does click when adjusting, I assume that means it's adjusting properly?
The bracket and cabling underneath look good, the front part of the cable that runs up to the handle does have some exposed cable where the sheath has wore off, but works properly.

This may be the reason then - if the cable has worn through the sheath / is visible underneath, chances are the cable has binded -> stretched.
If you can't get the shoes to engage after tightening the adjuster nut down to bottom, I would replace this cable first.. FWIW, I've had to replace (2) of them on the Sporty's here over the years, it's not uncommon.
Tip: Hit the bracket w/ PB Blaster or other penetrating lubricant a few times and use a wire brush to clean out any dirt/crud before attempting to remove the rear cable barrels from the bracket, then back off the adjuster nut so there is plenty of slack in the front cable. it makes the job changing out the front cable much easier.
I ended up removing the center console surrounding the e-brake lever when changing the cable out, so I knew the new cable was seated in the bottom inlet through the floor properly when I did this, FYI.
Ordered his cable..Just installed it.. Parking brake now works.. It's not as solid as I'd like, had to adjust it all the way up by the handle, and my brake cylinders in the back are adjusted, but it's 10x better than it was.
Thanks
