I am working on a 2001 sportage. This vehicle did run before the head was replaced. It has a new head, timing has been done correctly, I am getting spark and fuel. I will do a compression test tonite to verify that. If i crank on it for a minute it sounds like it is trying to run. anything else I need to look for?

Welcome to the forum.

This model is known to have problems with the crank timing belt gear - the woodruff key and keyway wallow out and as you can expect the timing goes way off - best check that if the compression test confirm low compression.

That compression should not prevent it from starting.

Post a photo of your cams and crank.

Yes, the timing marks are spot on, IF the crank pulley keyway and Woodruf key are good.

You could use a wooden dowel or something similar down the spark plug hole and feel if the piston is TDC when the crank mark lines up.

Are you sure it's first gear and not second? The computer will only shift to second gear when cold, makes you increase engine rpm to heat up the engine.

Easy check would be to let the car idle until fully warmed up and see if shifting is normal, also make sure the "hold" light on the dash is not illuminated.
