So, a few months ago I hit a horse with my kia, it ended up jumping time. I got the belt reset, marks all lined up and it starts up. But while it's running the belt walks off the gears. I found a lot of pieces of the timing belt cover behind the cover. When I hit the horse it broke the top half of the cover, crumpled the hood, and broke other stuff under the hood. I don't think either camshaft is bent tho. Any ideas? Thanks.
Could be the tension is not set correct. Since it broke the timing belt cover it could have damaged the tensioner and/or tensioner spring.
It could have also cracked or broke the water pump housing. My water pump housing broke behind the tension idler because a bolt had came loose & backed out. This in turn caused the belt to come off and the timing to jump.
There should be a thin metal guide plate that sits between the crank gear and the balancer pulley, can't think of anything else that would cause the belt to walk. Even if there was a separate reason, that plate should hold it back until it bends or the belt breaks.
Hi. I would focus on the tension of the belt first. if the belt is whining, for sure you have too much tension.
2nd, look at the water pump pulley, as well as the tensioner, check that they're all square and aligned with the cam sprockets.
I had this issue before with an '98 1.8l Sephia engine (very similar to the 2.0l Sportage), the problems was the cheap aftermarket water pump (the pulley wasn't aligning).

When the timing belt was replaced, it is possible that the front crank pulley center bolt has worked loose. Look at the belts to the alternator and AC compressor and see if they are running at an angle. If so, then the bottom pulley and timing belt drive gear has moved forward.
If this is the case, remove the bottom pulley/harmonic balancer and then pull the drive gear off and check the keyway in the crank. If the woodruff key is good and keyway is good, put it back together and locktite the centerbolt and torque it down to the proper torque setting. You will probably need to change the covers. Also while your in there, change the belt and idler pulley and water pump.
Hope this helps.

Gotta check that belt guide on the crank. Pretty much the only thing that keeps it from walking off. I started mine with it off just for a moment. Luckily it didn't come all the way off.
