output speed sensor

Hello All,
I have a 2000 Sportage 4WD with right over 200k on it. Yesterday the "hold" light came on along with the check engine light. It would not shift into 4th gear either. So, this morning I took it to Auto Zone to read the codes, and the lights were still on, but it shifted perfectly and ran fine.
They pulled the codes: P0722 (no signal from output sensor) and P1624 (request signal from TCM to ECM). They didnt really know what to tell me to fix it, so I thought I would try to do some research myself. But, on the way home, all the lights went off, it ran and shifted out fine, and all was well.
This evening I took it on an aprox 2 hour drive, and the trans started acting up, not shifting into 4th gear again, but no lights came on this time.
So, I am trying to figure out the best place to start here. Do I need to just replace the output speed sensor? Is it the sensor on the tailshaft of the transfer case in front of the driveshaft? Or are there other areas to look first.
Any help would be mighty appreciated.

Speed sensor also provides input to cruise control: if equipped with factory cruise control, suggest (disconnecting) the plug on the cruise control module (follow cc accelerator cable back from throttle body -> module mounted on driver side fender well) and retest for positive effect..

Well, I replaced the output speed sensor to no avail. Still not shifting into 4th and the hold and check engine light are on. i also tried disconnecting the cruise control, but that did not help either. I am still open for any ideas here. Thanks for all the input thus far.

The HOLD light flashes, the check engine light is on, and it will not shift into 4th. The button on the shifter does not function one way or the other at the moment. It has the code P0722, which is no signal from the output speed sensor. I replaced the sensor but did not fix the problem. Any ideas are still appreciated.

Finally Fixed It

Hello All,

Thought I would update this old thread. I finally gave up on finding the problem and just drove the Sportage w/o it shifting into 4th. Only drove it close to home, poor gas mileage and noisy. So the starter needed to be replaced, and it was very hard to do. There is a blind bolt, and I could hardly get to it, so I considered taking the transmission cross member out to lower the end of the engine a bit and maybe get my hand on the bolt. As I lay there contemplating, right above me was a two wired plug that had a nick in it. The nick had severed one wire, though the insulation was partly intact. So, once I finished the starter, I removed the connector as the cut was too close to the plug to just splice, and soldered in some new wire and replaced it. And wouldn't you know it, now it shifts into 4th. I had crawled around under that thing more than once looking for something like that, but somehow missed it. Anyway, thought I would share what my fix was.

Thanks much
