I'm having some trouble getting my motor in time (99 Kia Sportage) Clearly I missed a step somewhere, but I can't tell where! I've got it all back together, and it started just like it did before I replaced the water pump, however I hear a valve knocking slightly. I'm assuming the timing is only a little off, or it probably wouldn't even start? Am I correct in thinking this?

Also, will I need to pull everything apart again to get the timing correct, or can i use a timing gun and the distributor(?) If I do need to pull it apart, what steps specifically will I need to perform?

Thanks in advance for your help!

That appears to have fixed it! So either it was some slack in the belt, or I originally didn't have the marks lined up properly on the indexes....either is possible.

Anyhow, I pulled it apart again, lined everything up perfectly, and made sure there was enough tension. Now it runs better than it did before I changed the water pump! Thanks for your help, kville!
