Default mass air flow problems

Ok, I have a 97 sephia with 1.8 and manual. I bought it last summer and about 2 months after I bought it the exhaust rusted off and burnt the evap wires and screwed it all up. It killed the coil, ecu, and mass air flow sensor(supposidly). We fixed the wires, got a new ecu, and fixed the coil. Well with the maf sensor upluged it would run but had to crank it twice to start and gave me a big dead spot in the throttle and fowled spark plugs really fast. I finally got the money to get the maf sensor and it still didn't fix the problem. When you plug in the maf sensor in the air stream, it kills the car and you have to pump and feather the peddle to keep it running, this is with the old and the new(used off of a wrecked car) sensor. With it out of the air stream it runs great except the dead spot is still there. So what I did was tape the ends of one and leave it to the side plugged in so I get the air temp so it doesn't foul out the plugs, but no air on the sensor element to kill the car. The other thing is that on my scanner it doesn't advance the spark advance without air to the sensor. Oh it also drops my mpg from 34 to 21.

So what I am asking is does anyone know what it could be? Any help would be awesome.

Welcome to the forum.

It would be best to get it connected to a scanner (not basic code reader) that can display live data from all the sensors etc. and with this, an experienced tech will identify the problem.

I have a scanner that displays live data and work as a general serivice tech at a shop and none of the certified techs can diagnose the problem.

When reading the live data it shows that the maf should be within good paramaters, so it has just about everyone stumped.
