Default 98 Kia Tranny Issues, here are the codes, Please Help!

I bought a 98 Kia Sephia last year. It's always shifted kind of funny and the O/D Off light used to blink at random. It's been blinking for about 2 months solid now in conjunction with the Check Engine light being on. I took it to Auto Zone and it gave me the following codes. I'm wandering where to start here to try and fix this thing the cheapest way possible. Please review the codes and offer any info you may have:

p1624-MIL request from tcm to ecm error.....trouble in tcm???
p0733-3rd gear ratio incorrect
p0734-4th gear ratio incorrect
p0740-damper clutch solenoid system???
p0116-ECT sensor 1 circuit range performance condition???
p0101-mass or volume air flow circuit range
p0732-2nd gear ratio incorrect

This is what the guy at Auto Zone wrote down for me. I think he left some parts out. I think the p0101 code is due to my cracked air filter case, but other than that I'm clueless. Thank you so much for your time in looking into this. If you need more info please let me know. Jeff

Ok Code P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance, check for an air leak in intake system, probably the cracked air filter case.

P1624 MIL request signal from TCM to ECM, thats the Transmission Control Module telling the ECM that something is wrong. Codes P0732, P0733 & P0734 are Gears 2, 3, 4 Incorrect Ratio, drive the vehicle for 5 miles and check your A/T fluid level. Also note the color of the fluid. Code P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit/Open, check for an air leak between the TPS and MAF (probably the air intake boot); otherwise same deal as the codes P0732-P0734. All codes are pointing to the transmission needs serviced whether it be maintenance or rebuilt/replacement. Good luck.

PacosWorld, thank you for the info. I was trying to avoid going to a shop to get this things serviced, and wondering what order I should start in to address the issues. I've seen posts on here that say it could be a VSS, or the TCM, I was just wondering what direction to take to try and start to fix the problem myself. Such as what exactly could throw off the gear ratios, or make the ECM think the ratios are off. Can you offer any advice as to what part to start with to try to correct the issue without a shop doing it?

Also, at the risk of sounding like a total idiot, what is a TPS and MAF? And where do are they located? Thank you very much for your time and help. I really do appreciate it.

I did check the Tranny fluid after a trip to Wal-Mart (round trip about 10 miles) and the car was in neutral and running. The fluid was dark reddish, but did have a couple of bubbles in it. The speedometer also does some crazy things. Like once it gets to about 35 miles an hour, it bounces from 35 to the actual speek I am going. I'm not sure if this plays in at all, but I hope this helps. Jeff

TPS - Throttle Position Sensor, its a part of the the throttle body where the air goes into from the air filter box. MAF - Mass Air Flow sensor, its between the air filter box and air intake boot. The air intake boot can loose its flexibility over time and crack at the creases.

With the speedometer bouncing around, thats probably related to the VSS. Gear ratios, you might be one of the following related items:
• Low ATF level.
• Low Line Pressure.
• Internal transmission malfunction.
• Shift solenoid stuck open or closed.
• Faulty Linear Solenoid Valve.

. Did Autozone clear the codes? If so, you might take it back and see what codes come back.

When you checked the A/T fluid, where was it set at?

The tranny fluid is at the 65 celcius mark when I let it idle up to temp, put it in neutral and leave it running. It has some definite bubbles in it, and now looks kinda brownish red. Does this sound like anything that would indicate a problem? Please let me know when you can. Also, this is the third time I've been back to Auto Zone and same codes are popping up. I had them clear the codes both the previous times, and the same ones are popping back up. Jeff

I'd hate to say it, but it looks like that you'll have to have the tranny further diagnosed at a repair shop. They'll have to open up the tranny to inspect the shift solenoids or hook up a pressure gauge to check line pressure.
