Look under the intake manifold just behind the alternator - that's where the filter is on my Kia (97 sephia with the 1.8 liter & 5 speed). I use a Purolator PureOne filter part # PL14610. I buy them 6 at a time from Amazon and they're about $5 each that way - Amazon pays the shipping if your orders are over a certain dollar amount.
This isn't the origional equipment replacement part number - this filter has the same base and diameter as the stock filter, it's just about 3/8" longer and has a WAY better filter media than most other filters. Mobile is also another excellent brand name of filter.
As for oil, I use a 10-30 if the weather is fair to warm, and 5-30 if we're in freezing weather. I change it about every 3000 miles, and check it at every fill up. Good clean oil at the proper level is a LOT cheaper than a new motor.
A common mistake a lot of DIY guys make is to overtighten the crap out of the drainplug and strip out the threads in the oil pan. Go to contact, then maybe 1/8 to 3/16 of a turn more - or about 18 ft lbs of torque if you have a torque wrench. It's better to live with a little seep than to have to repair a stripped out drainplug.
Remember all the safety stuff - proper blocking, set the parking brake, chock the wheels - basically use good sense and you'll be fine. Good luck!
