Hello, my Kia is overheating. 1997 sephia 117K
1.) the fan does goes on
2.) There is no visible leaks any where on car or on ground near radiator
3.) In the winter it was blowing cold air from heater. Now it seems ok, its about 55 F today
4.) Temp gauge in car shows cooling when Im driving it. The faster the cooler.

first coolant level and more important - do you have water or coolant?
then, thermostat - it may be damaged. I suspect (if on winter it was cold) the thermostat is open, but it's not wide open. And moreover, it does not move at all now.
Therefore, on winter the engine did not reach the right temp, and on summer it will (thermostat) high flow of coolant.

Although, there is another thing. Water pump. It could be worn and not pump fast enough.

Anyway, for sure flush the system and change thermostat.
Then, inspect water pump from inside (if there is easy access). Some cars have water pump close to thermostat so that when you remove it you may see some part of the pump.

Flushing system is advised since radiator may be clogged.

Thanks 4 the reply, I live in Michigan so we had a VERYYY Cold Winter this year, Below 0f a lot.. So, haha, I went outside tonight and decided to change the thermostat , only took me 19 minutes to do in the dark, very easy on the 1997 Kia Sephia. Then , DUMB me, I looked at the engine coolant and it was empty,!!! haha, I havent used this car for a few months, and since today was so nice , I want to get it on the road again, I rememberr I had to put water in it in the summer, so i am imagining it all dried up ... Well, I will buy some antifreeze for it in the morning and pray that does the trick,

I am though getting it flushed this weekend...

Thanks for the quick response!!!!!!

You do not need to tell me what winter is in MI. Although, the last one (well, it still can come back, and it will...) was pretty snowy and cold.
So, add even water and see what happens. If it works fine, than you are OK.
Let it work for couple of days (let water to wash the system) and than drain it before it gets cold again. You do not want to crack the engine.

check gasket around thermostat and hoses. You could miss something or not tighten clamp

Update, one of the issues was the gasket around the thermostat. What happened was the old gasket was caked on a little and i didn't notice it the night before. SO i looked at it today and saw that it was leaking a little from there. The gasket wasn't flush against the metal. SO, I scraped the old gasket remains off and put the new one on then tighten it good. That fixed that issue. I filled it up with antifreeze and test drove it, no overheating anymore . So, in the morning I will see if there are any leaks on the ground just to make sure that was the issue.

To sum up, overheating..
1.) new thermostat and new gasket
2.) Made sure the old gasket was clean off the metal where it fits on

So far so good
